Cameron Mackintosh

Producer

Cameron Mackintosh, one of the country’s youngest producers, started producing shows fourteen years ago at the age of twenty and has presented over one hundred productions both on tour and in the West End. His London shows include the highly acclaimed revival of Lionel Bart’s Oliver! which is also opening in Sydney, New York, Toronto and Copenhagen, and more recently the smash-hit production of Lerner and Loewe’s My Fair Lady now it it’s second year at the Adelphi Theatre. Earlier West End production include Tony Hatch’s The Card, Godspell – which has appeared at a total of seven West End Theatres – Julian Slade’s Trelawney, Cole Porter’s Anything Goes and the children’s musicals The Owl and the Pussycat Went to See, Winnie-the-Pooh and the regular Christmas seasons of The Gingerbread Man. He also presented the original West End production of Side by Side by Sondheim. Last autumn he presented a tour of The Rocky Horror Show in Germany. In September of 1980 the highly successful production of Oklahoma! opened at the Palace Theatre, and is also going to be staged in Australia and Denmark next year. This continued the successful collaboration between the Arts Council and a commercial management, and gave Cameron the opportunity to put into practice his belief that the great musicals should not be treated as “untouchable classics” but given a fresh look in the same way the RSC and the National Theatre revive old plays. Cameron’s most recent production, in association with The Really Useful Company Ltd and Bernard Thoebald, in the West End was the award-winning, Jeeves Takes Charge at the Fortune Theatre. Apart from Oklahoma!, My Fair Lady and Cats, Cameron currently has a fourth production running in the West End, the musical review Tomfoolery which he also devised. Based on the words and music of Tom Lehrer, it shortly goes into its second year at the Criterion Theatre and is currently delighting unsuspecting audiences in Australia, Canada, Ireland, Denmark, America, Hong Kong and Israel.
