Delia Hannah

GRIZABELLA

Delia Hannah is one of Australia’s finest musical theatre performers with a number of leading roles to her credit. Her career began by running away with a touring production of The Pirates of Penzance so it’s no surprise to find her running away again with Cats – this time reprising a role she first played three years ago, the ‘glamour cat’ – Griazbella. A decade ago a twist of fate turned a two week holiday in Sydney into a two year engagement with the original Australian production of Les Miserables, directed by Trevor Nunn, which for Delia included over 150 performances in the role of Fantine. Other musical theatre roles include Miss Santiago in The Buddy Holly Story, Miranda in Nick Enright and Denis Watkins’ zany send-up musical Beach Blanket Tempest, and Florence Vassey in the New Zealand production of Chess working with Tommy Korberg and Murray Head. A big break followed when Delia was chosen to star in a new and award-winning Australian production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s favourite musical – Aspects of Love, directed by the brilliant Gale Edwards and designed by Tony Award winner Roger Kirk. An invitation to open the UK production followed and while she was away, Delia was awarded a “Variety Club Award for Best Actress in a Musical” and nominated for a Mo Award for her performance as Rose Vibert. Later that year, after returning home to Sydney, Delia was once again summoned to London to meet with producers – returning to play Mrs Johnson in Willy Russell’s much-loved musical Blood Brothers, which toured New Zealand, Melbourne and Sydney. For her portrayal of this role, she was awarded the “Sydney Critics Circle Award for Best Performance in a Musical.” Since then there have been various engagements – concerts and television appearances on The Midday Show, Tonight Live, Hey Hey It’s Saturday, Good Morning Australia and In Melbourne Tonight. Another highlight was touring Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan in The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber as a featured soloist with Anthony Warlow and Sarah Brightman. It’s also worth mentioning a season in Wellington playing Anita in West Side Story. More recently she has toured with the 10th anniversary production of Les Miserables in the role of Fantine. Delia has just released her album, Down Stage Centre.
